The season embraces the electrifying, heart-breaking, suffocating power of love in all its forms!
The season embraces the electrifying, heart-breaking, suffocating power of love in all its forms, from familial bonds to unlikely friendships, from intoxicating first love to love that is messy, overwhelming and impossible. Filled, in equal measure, with hope and sorrow. Yet, despite everything it is something we all do. It is this huge, complex emotion that drives the incredible plays in the Exchange’s new season for 2023/24.
Epic classics and exceptional contemporary playwriting sit side by side this autumn. Classic tales of love are subverted and retold with fresh perspectives by some of the UK’s most exceptional playwrights and theatre makers, revealing just how much these stories remain relevant today.
Award-winning, established and new-generation theatre artists build four extraordinary productions in the Royal Exchange’s unique space. In September the formidable team of Tamasha’s Pooja Ghai and award-winning writer Tanika Gupta present a Dicken’s classic reworked for Manchester audiences. Nicholai La Barrie makes his Exchange debut with the greatest love story of all time and Sarah Frankcom returns at Christmas with a heart-wrenching tale of forbidden love. The season ends with the World Premiere of Phoebe Eclair-Powell’s stunning new play and Bruntwood winner directed by Atri Banerjee.
